Australians gathered in the thousands inside Sydney’s Victoria Park before marching on Town Hall in the central business district, accompanied by a heavy police presence that included on board police and riot officers.
Protesters carried signs, and in a video posted on Twitter by Pedestrian Daily journalist Zac Crellin, they can be heard shouting: “What do we want? Freedom. When do we want it? Now!”
In Crellin’s videos, supporters can be heard blowing their horns and showing their own signs, amid shouts and shouts of protesters as they marched.
Some of the signs read “Reveal the truth” and “It’s safer to stay away from the media than to stay away from social.”
NSW Police say they recognize and support the rights to free speech and peaceful assembly, but the protest is a violation of public health orders.
“The priority for NSW Police has always been the safety of the wider community,” according to a police statement, describing it as a “high-visibility policing operation” in response to “unauthorized protest activity.”
Police confirmed that “a” arrest had been made. Some of the protesters reportedly threw plastic bottles and plants taken from the road, the AAP reported. Other arrests are possible seen in the videos posted on Twitter.
