Under current law, residents must go through training, submit fingerprints, demonstrate handgun proficiency and pay a $ 40 application fee to obtain a license to carry a firearm. Now, anyone over the age of 21 and not yet prohibited from owning firearms by state or federal law can carry a firearm in public.
There are some carveouts on permission to carry bill, because employers may prohibit employees from carrying handguns to work and private businesses may prohibit customers from carrying firearms on their property.
And even if training is no longer required to carry handguns, the Texas Department of Public Safety will offer a free gun safety course online.
Texas is joined by about 20 other states that have some unauthorized carrying law on books. Texans are already allowed to carry guns in public without permission.
Permitless brought a victory for conservative lawmakers and gun rights activists who helped mediate the bill.
“This is a simple law about advancing self-defense.
