Update (1615ET): McAfee’s attorney confirmed ABC News that his client was found dead in a Spanish jail cell on Wednesday.
The 75-year-old businessman was arrested on tax evasion charges for failing to file taxes back four years. He has been incarcerated in Spain since Oct. 6, facing charges that he hid vital assets including real estate and a yacht. His defense attorneys argued that the extradition request was politically motivated and therefore inappropriate. He disagrees with the current monetary system, making him “public enemy No. 1,” according to court documents released Wednesday.
The U.S. estimates that McAfee owes more than $ 4.2 million in taxes, documents show.
The ruling has been the latest setback for McAfee but it’s not the start of his legal trouble. In March, the SEC accused him of hiding cryptocurrency revenue in excess of $ 23MM. Manhattan U.S. attorney Audrey Strauss says McAfee “takes advantage of a widely used social media platform and enthusiasm among investors in the emerging cryptocurrency market to profit millions through lies and fraud. “

Modification (1530ET): After Spain’s National Court approved a request for his extradition back to the US, where he faces the prospect of dying in a prison, the Spanish newspaper The Country reports Wednesday night John McAfee committed suicide in his cell, dying at age 75.
He was imprisoned in a Barcelona prison. Currently, the initial evidence of his death, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, local time, points to suicide.
He was first arrested by Spanish authorities on October 3, 2020 at El Prat airport, just as he was about to board a plane in Turkey. He was arrested by U.S. law, where he wanted to evade millions of dollars in taxes. Spanish judge José de la Mata reportedly ordered his arrest.
In the last tweet sent from an account tied to McAfee, the cybersecurity software administrator warned that “all power is corrupt.” In recent weeks, his tweets have seemed even more hopeless.
In a democracy, power is given not taken away.
But it’s still power.
Love, compassion, care are useless for it. But it is the fuel for greed, hatred, envy…
All power is destroyed.
Be careful what powers you allow to be exercised in a democracy.

One of McAfee’s tweets from 2019 featured a pointless warning about the eccentric founder, he was making a lot of money from his eponymous security software after it wasted, possibly “arranged” by the government in US.
Get subtle messages from U.S. officials saying, such as: “We’re coming for you McAfee! We’re going to kill yourself”. I’m getting a tattoo now just in case. If I commit suicide, I don’t. I struggled. Check my right arm.$ WHACKD only applicable to https://t.co/HdSEYi9krq🙂 pic.twitter.com/rJ0Vi2Hpjj

He sent out another tweet with the same message about being “Epsteined” a year ago.
I am content here. I have friends.
The food is good. All is well.
Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it’s not my fault.

We will inevitably be surprised if ‘conspiracy theories’ about the circumstances of his death emerge in the coming weeks as they end the imprisonment of a notorious American.

Last week, McAfee tweeted “I don’t. However, I have no regrets.”
The US believes I am hiding crypto. I wanted to do it but it melted away through a lot of Team McAfee’s hands (don’t need your faith), and the rest of the assets got me all. My friends evaporate through the fear of association.
However, I have no regrets.

The charges will apply to income received between 2014 and 2018. He was arrested in October at Barcelona’s international airport, after a judge decided he should be imprisoned pending the consequences of his extradition ruling.
Earlier this month, McAfee argued at a videolink hearing that the charges against him political enthusiasm, and that he would die in prison if he is returned to the US.
As in CoinTelegraph note:
McAfee’s life behind bars can be seen as a reflection, as he constantly tweets messages with tones that change amid grief, acceptance for his circumstances, mixed with burning. to invade U.S. government officials.
In a June 9 tweet, he notes that “after countless lawsuits and the arrival of the FED I am no more now. But inside these prisons I have never felt more free. The things that you believe are yours, are truly yours. . ”
I have a million followers but I would be surprised if even 1% wouldn’t think to read my tweets.
The ramblings of an old man disappear in an almost endless Twitter verse – like tears in the rain.
As you think I have a sad day.

This is a different take on McAfee’s early years where its net worth grew to $ 100 million from its successful anti-virus software firm.. McAfee previously owned a mansion worth more than $ 5 million in Colorado Springs, and still lives on a luxury yacht off the coast of the Dominican Republic, where he called a “boat of freedom.”
According to a June 2020 lawsuit from the Justice Division’s Tax Division and Tennessee prosecutors, McAfee faces a minimum of five years in each tax evasion count and a minimum of one year in each count of willful failure to file a tax return. –CoinTelegraph
There was a lot of grief in prison, disguised as hatred.
Sadness is clearly visible even on the most angry faces.
I am old and content with food and bed but for the child prison is a horror – a problem in the minds of those who conceive them.
