In an email in February 2020 between Drs. Anthony Fauci and former Obama health and human services (HHS) secretary Sylvia Burwell, the nation’s top infectious disease expert. said that store-bought face masks are less effective in protecting one against COVID-19 – an opinion he maintained at least until March last year.

There are hundreds of pages of emails retrieved Washington Post and BuzzFeed through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Fauci was asked about the masks of former Obama Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell.
“I will travel to. People suggested I get a mask for the airport. Is this what I need to do, ”Burwell asked.
To which Fauci replied: “Masks are really for infected people to prevent them from spreading the infection to uninfected people rather than to protect uninfected people from getting the infection. The typical mask you buy at the drug store is not really effective at preventing the virus, which is small enough to pass the material.. However, it can provide little benefit to avoid severe three drops if you have a cough or sneeze. ”
