More than 4,100 people have been hospitalized or died with COVID in the U.S. despite being fully vaccinated, according to new data from Centers for Disease Prevention and Prevention (CDC).
As of June 21, nearly half (49%) of the cases occurred in women and 76% were aged 65 years and older. There were a total of 3,907 hospitalizations and 750 deaths of those with successful infections, although not all hospitalizations could be the primary cause of COVID, Reported by Forbes.
Agreed to CDC website, the number of COVID vaccine-broken infections is likely to be an undercount of all SARS-CoV-2 infections among fully vaccinated individuals due to passive and voluntary reporting.
“This surveillance data is a snapshot and will help identify patterns and look for signals among cases of vaccine breakdown,” the agency said. “No unexpected patterns have been identified in reported successful infections.”
On May 1, the The CDC moved from monitoring all reported vaccine breakthrough cases to reporting only cases that resulted in hospitalization or death, one step criticized the agency to health experts.
Even if the CDC says the reporting shift “will help increase the quality of data collected on cases of the most clinical and public health significance,” the change in reporting results in a low overall number of reports in successful U.S. cases
Agreed to CDC data, a total of 10,262 SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infections were recorded from 46 U.S. states and territories as of April 30, including 995 hospitalized and 160 deaths.

“Even if the numbers are small, the fact that it has reached vaccinated people means… that we’re still investigating how many vaccinated people are also infected,” Levy said.
