Newsom pushes COVID-19 vaccine certification system not vaccine passport | California

(The Center Square) – In response to the state announcing it will open a new “vaccine certification system” for private businesses this week, Governor Gavin Newsom told reporters it was not a vaccine passport.

On Tuesday, California fully opened with no capacity limits, with the state moving an updated mask order. Masks are still required to be worn in schools and by those who have not received the vaccine inside restaurants and other public indoor facilities.

Businesses are also allowed to open that will require individuals to present vaccine papers on paper to prove they do not have to wear a mask. Businesses were told by the state they had three options related to vaccines and mask mandates. Business owners can provide information to customers and never need anything. They may implement “vaccine verification” to determine which people should wear a mask, or they may require everyone to wear a mask.

Since some individuals have already begun producing fake paper cards designed to show if someone has received one or both of the COVID-19 shots, the state has begun making an electronic version of the paper. Individuals can show businesses their electronic vaccination verification information from their phones.

Newsom told reporters that the electronic system “is not a passport. It is not necessary. The only ability now is to have an electronic version of that version on paper. You will hear more about that in the following couple day.

“As it relates to technology and technology tools, there are opportunities available, different strategies to provide a more secure, secure, and transparent form of authentication. But again, it’s voluntary. That’s what I want. to clear this crystal before people run – it becomes political, almost all in the state, country – with no mandate, no requirement, no passport in that respect.

Nearly half of U.S. states prohibit any state agency or business, depending on the state, from requiring vaccine passports. All the states that do this are led by Republicans.
